How I Created a Bee-utiful Canvas

I'm up on The Crafters Workshop blog where I created this canvas.

Here is my special tip for this project. When you are using a large canvas on a small substrate, move it around and find part of the stencil that fits the best.

A Bouquet for her Wedding

Hi Everyone! My sister got married a few weeks ago. For her shower I creating this 14 x 24 wood panel for her.

It took me one full weekend but a couple of hours each night after work to finish it. Although I used stencils for the flowers, I did not use the whole stencil design in one spot. I added flowers with paint and I also added flowers with TCW Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste. 

Each part of the design that I added with modeling paste, I had to wait for it to dry before adding more. That's why it took so long. TCW Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste dries fast if you put it in front of a fan. Don't use a heat gun unless you want the paste to look bubbled. 

TCW Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste is porous so when you add a little water and then add paint it's reactive. The paint will spread through the paste.  I think that's why it's my favorite. Its like magic!

I'm currently working on two more right now. Very different from each other and this one. I'm creating paintings for a Breast Cancer Fundraiser called Scraptoberfest.  Everyone buys as many tickets as they want for all the raffle prizes to get a chance to win something. It's an all day event, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.  I don't scrap but I bring stuff to make cards or work in an art journal.   100% of the proceeds go towards those who need wigs, prosthetics, rent, electricity, etc.

Mixed Media Art Tags: I Spy .....

Stencils!  Can you see them on these tags?

There are many times I use stencils just for texture and you can't really see them. Stencils also can be used for many other elements in art.

Lets start with this art tag. I used two stencil images; one you can't really see and other you can.

I start my art tags by going through my drawer of scraps.

Then pull out scraps I want to use and start adding paint to the tags, scraps of paper and TCW Modeling Pastes.  This swan tag I painted the tag white and added the Ornate Border stencil.

Then I used acrylic paints, paper scraps to create the background. My mother painted the swans. I took a photograph of her painting and printed out the swans on card stock, fussy cut and used on this tag. To add the water I used the Ornate Border stencil with modeling paste and painted it in shades of blue.  Do you see the first stencil? You can see it a little behind the green branches behind the swans.

My next stencil I painted the tag in bright colors, used TCW modeling pastes, and paper scraps.

 

Stencils Used: TCW773 Connected Dots, TCW756 Magic Ladder (green paint), TCW764 Number Scramble, TCW761 Solemn Branch.  Mediums Used: TCW Champagne Gold Modeling Paste, TCW Black Modeling Paste

The new metallic modeling pastes by The Crafters Workshop are fantastic. Not because I'm on the design team but because I truly love them. There are a must try!!!   I also used the Ornate Border stencil again on the front of the tag, rub-ons, and scrap paper at the bottom. The butterfly is from my drawer of scraps.

Butterflies 2: Mixed Media Canvas

Sometimes creating art and blogging don't mix. I'm creating lots of art but I don't have pictures of my process so I feel like I shouldn't share it. I know...share it anyway.  But today's post I have a few pictures of my process YAY!!!

   

I started this piece using a 12"x 12" cradled wood panel. Almost all my art starts with painting the substrate black. I love the way the colors pop off black so that why I start this way. This piece I painted over the black with green, white, and yellow. The globe is from a napkin and the hot air balloon is a stamp on tissue paper I found in my stash. The bottom is a mixed of book pages, music paper, tape, and scrap paper.  

I used The Crafters Workshop (TCW) Matte Gel Medium to adhere all the bits and pieces of paper. All the other marks were created by using TCW stencils: Ornate Border TCW785 and Distressed Details TCW754.

In the photo below the paint was dry and I started adding rub-ons. I believe they are from Tim Holtz but I don't keep any of my packaging so I'm not sure. I also added more yellow paint and my favorite color, black. I love the darkness and looking up to the top of the canvas to the light.

With the addition of black paint I decided to add more from the Ornate Borders stencil and added more rub-ons.  If you notice I used all the words from the rub-on page. I love to do that although its expensive having to buy them all over again.  I also use TCW gel medium over the rub-ons so they stay on permanently.  The butterflies are from my stash.

Here is the finished piece again. The only change I'm going to make is to add shadows to the butterfly wings.

Traveling with Art Supplies

Hi Everyone!

When I go on vacation I always carry art supplies with me.

This trip I kept to watercolors knowing that paint and other supplies would be available.

Today I'm going to show all the unfinished pages I worked on.

 

These pages are for coloring.

Although it has given me an idea for a canvas.

 

I've had these Zebras for a while now.

I cut them from reams of paper.

The Overlapping Stripes stencil is perfect for this page.

Yupo Again: Content

I think Yupo is my favorite to work with.

I can use it all the time.

This piece started like this.

Then I started mark making, using baby wipes to take some paint away, then added more paint.

ARTSISTA'S RETREAT OCT 2015 - PART 1

Hi Everyone.

I'm a little behind on posts.

I'm still trying to unpack from my last art retreat.

 

 

 

 

 

We all got together again to laugh, cry, create art, eat, laugh, cry, eat, create art.

I was also shown the art of going to tag sales and antique shops.

Not all antiques are old!

 

We had an amazing time.

+Pam Wildeboer  and Sherie +Sherie Eddy rented a house in Michigan on the lake.

It was beautiful.

Tons of room for all our supplies.

 

Today I only have pictures from my cell phone.

I took 295 pictures with my camera.

I'm still going through them.

 

+Pam Wildeboer brought a selfie stick.

I've never used one but it worked out great since my arms are so short.

I can never get everyone in the picture.

Pam and Sherie taught us how to make dolls.

I didn't think I would like it but it was so much fun.

I think I may be making a few tiny robots next.

She did have a spider hanging in the back but it fell off.

Both sides and back of her head I used the Spider stencil (TCW) and black modeling paste to add more details to her head.

 

 

I brought Yupo, India inks, high flow acrylics, and The Crafter's Workshop stencils and showed the girls how to use it.

That was another surprise.

I didn't think they would like it. They loved it.

The best part of these Artsistas' weekends is that we have so much fun and get to create amazing art.

We feed off each other and end up with lists of what we want to buy and create next.

I've grown to really love my Artsistas!

They are truly a blessing.

Not sure I'm liking this but ....

I'm going to show it to you anyway.

I've this finished for over a year.

In an effort to clearing out my art room, I took all my paintings and brought them out to the living room.

This was supposed to be a gift.

I shared this on my Facebook page and Instagram and many people liked it.

It never ceases to amaze me that the pieces I don't like everyone loves.

The whole thing was created with The Crafter's Workshop stencils.

As you can see it was created with tons of stencils.

The butterflies are images I have that I print when I need them.

The flowers are also from a stencil (not sure which one I used) but I added to them.

Remember just because you use an image on a stencil doesn't mean you can change it.

They are a stepping stone to your creativity.
