Free to Fly

Just a quick one today. Here is a 5"x5" mixed media piece I did.  Yes, stencils were used (stencil aliens you know!), modeling paste, butterfly images, lots of acrylic paints.

I love the colors. They aren't my usual combination but I think I may use them again.
Do you have a favorite color combination?

A Birthday Tea Party

This card is for a first birthday. I get asked to make birthday cards where I incorporate their picture in the scene. I actually love doing it. It takes me quite a few days to figure out what I want to do. It's nice when there is not a theme or a favorite character they like because them I'm free to do anything.

I have tons of vintage images and found this one of a little girl and two of her friends having a tea party in a birds nest with curious little fairies watching.  I added the birthday girl's head and extra leaves in scene and around the card. I print two copies of the scense and cut out characters or other images to add for dimension. I always leave the inside blank so they can write their own birthday greetings.

Moon Light in the City

This piece is not finished yet but I thought I would show it to you. I've been working on this piece for quite a while. I add color here and there then hang it up for days before I do anything else. It's hanging in my art room again and who knows when I will finish it.

This canvas started with the city and lots of bright colors then I added the trees with modeling paste. After that I spilled dark paint on it and it just worked.  The moon and the taller tress were added and I just kept going with it.  It will hang in my art room until I see something else I want to add or decide it's finished.

How many paintings to you have waiting to be finished?

Thank You Stencil Aliens!

My stencils aliens always seem to talk me into buying more stencils but they do help me keep my mojo going. The last couple of days I've been working on projects here and there and they are all in stages. I'm either waiting for them to dry or I let them sit a couple of days to decide if they are finished or just don't have time after work to finish them.  This is when my mojo disappears and hides underneath all the stuff on my floor or table but my stencil aliens always seem to find him.

If you haven't used any stencils or have them and don't know what to do with them, just grab some paper, paint, inks, and just start making patterns on paper. It's amazing how your mojo shows up. After playing on scraps of paper with acrylic paints I found I was using only three colors and love it; gray, black and white. I decided to to this journal page.

Here is a close up of the bottom of the page. I found some glass beads and decided to add them in for some texture. I love the way they look. I will definitely be using them again.

What gets your mojo going again?

The Face with Stencils

Today I have a mixed media piece that I made on a 8" x 10" mixed media board. I love the way it came out. Lots of bright colors.  I used acrylic paints, paper and these stencils.

TCW408 Shattered Circles

TCW384 Well-Rounded

TCW413 Three-Quarter

As you can see on the profile stencil she has more hair but I decided not to use it. Once I finished the background and added her to the board I stopped working on it for a couple of days.  I found some great paper scraps that I used to punch circles and added that to her head. It sat for a couple days more until I knocked over some papers on my table and found a few pages of butterfly images. I think it's done for the most part. I will tweak it here and there and then I will frame it.

You can see all the paper circles here.

I didn't realize the butterfly on her neck had the same color combination.

You can see all the detail on the paper circles; lots of textures and I drew in the antenna on each butterfly.

Now to find a frame which will be hard to do because I don't want to flatten out the butterflies. I will post a picture of it when I'm done.

Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas

I am almost caught up with Linda's 12 Tags of Christmas.  Here are my tags for weeks three, four, five and six.

Week Three - See Linda's Tag HERE.

Inspiration: Angel

Stencil aliens talked me into buying a new stencil. I was lucky they found it in the sale bin. It has wings and a heart on it but I just used one wing.

Week Four - See Linda's Tag HERE

Inspiration:  Poinsettia

This tag was made with modeling paste and spray inks then I added glitter glue to the middle of the flowers.

Inspiration: Santa

I have the same stamp Linda's used but I can't find it. I must clean up my Christmas stamps. I decided to use this one instead.

Inspiration: Cardinals

I love bird stamps and I don't have that many. I did buy this one last year and I haven't used it yet. I decided to stamp it and fussy cut it to add to the tag. I used one of Tim Holtz's new stencils, Stripes, with modeling paste then added gold acrylic ink and sprayed it with water. I love the way it looks. I may do more like this in the future.  Linda's sells all Tim Holtz's stencils in her boutique. Click HERE to see everything she has to offer.

I'm almost caught up with Linda!

My Heart and Head are Not Speaking

I'm having those days were my head is full of a million different emotions and my heart can't figure them out.  Plus my head is spinning with all these things I need to get done and no matter how many I accomplish when I go to bed my mind won't shut off.  No sleep makes me grumpy. Here is quick journal page. The background was already done. I don't even remember when I created it. I just added the stamp and writing.

Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas Week 2

Today I have another tag for Linda's 12 Tags of Christmas.  Her tag is monochromatic, has a deer and stars on it and that is my inspiration for my tag.

Bubbles of Ideas in My Head

Today I have a journal page to show you. It already had leftover inks from stencils on the page so it was a quick page. I felt like I had all these bubbles of ideas floating in my head and I couldn't see them; like my mojo was running so fast I could figure out what it was thinking. You can see the white circles all over the head.

I used the following stencils; Three Quarter Profile, Circle Explosion and Herringbone. The circles and herringbone are my favorite stencils.

Challenge: 12 Tags of Christmas: Week 1

Linda is again having her Christmas tag challenge on her blog,  The Funkie Junkie. Of course I'm behind. She is on week 7 and I just finished week one. I'm hoping to be all caught up by the end of the weekend.

This is how the challenge works. Linda creates a tag and you find something about her tag that inspires you to create a tag, card, scrapbook page, tree ornament, etc.  Week one is all about chalk and for me I decided that I loved the idea was black and white so I created a tag.

I used a black tag, die cut snowflakes border (Memory Box Die), punched tiny circles and used the snowflake from Tim Holtz stamp set, Christmas Blueprints. You can buy this stamp set in Linda's boutique, The Funkie Junkie Boutique. I really love the black and white. I may do something like this for Christmas cards.

Head on over to Linda's blog and join in on the challenge.
The link to each week's tag is located on the
top right hand side on her blog.
You can get all the supplies you need in Linda's Funkie Junkie Boutique
You have until December 22nd to post all your creations.
One down, 11 more to go!

I met Seth Apter at the Contemporary Art Fair in NYC

As a surprise to my god-daughter I took her to NYC on Sunday, October 27th to see the Contemporary Art Fair held at the Javits Center and I wanted to finally meet Seth Apter. Click here to see a few of his pieces.  Meeting other artists online is wonderful but to finally meet one of them in person is fantastic.

Let me tell you that everything you hear about Seth is true. He is so nice, down to earth, and an amazing artist. He was one of only a handful of artists who let you go up close and touch his pieces. I have his surface techniques DVD and it was great to see these techniques close up.

Here is a picture of the two of us. I can't believe I posting it. I hate my picture taken.

I was so amazed at the art work that I didn't take many pictures. I did take a picture of the flying artist and his art. Yes, flying.

Then we went to lunch in Time Square and took pictures of all the characters.

Of course, we had to go into the Disney Store. When you go up the escalator you see all the lanterns from the movie Tangled and we took our picture in a mirror. I actually love that picture.

What was really interesting this trip is everyone was taking pictures with their cell phones. Not very many actual cameras. I think I would feel naked without my camera.

If you look at her cell you can see she was taking a picture of the naked cowboy.

Going back to Saturday we pulled out all my Halloween stuff and created a couple of pieces. This is my god-daughters canvas. She doesn't feel that it's finished yet but I love it. She also made a tag but I didn't take a picture of it.

Here is my tag.  We both made Halloween tags with Prima's doll stamps.

We had tons of fun in NYC.
The art show was amazing.
